Authentication
What is DMARC Alignment?
The requirement that an authenticated SPF or DKIM domain match the visible From domain for DMARC to pass.
Alignment compares the domain validated by SPF (the envelope sender) or DKIM (the signing domain) against the header From domain. It can be strict, requiring an exact domain match, or relaxed, allowing subdomains of the same organizational domain. DMARC passes only when at least one of SPF or DKIM both passes and aligns; authentication alone without alignment is not enough.
Why it matters for cold email
Many cold-email setups pass raw SPF or DKIM yet still fail DMARC because the authenticated domain does not align with the From domain, pushing mail to spam. Achieving alignment, usually via a custom Return-Path and a domain-specific DKIM signature, is what makes DMARC actually pass for your outreach.
