What is Spam Trap (Honeypot)?
An email address used solely to catch senders with poor list hygiene or no permission.
A spam trap is an address that belongs to no real user and exists only to identify senders who email without proper permission or hygiene. Pristine traps are addresses never used by a human and seeded to catch scrapers, while recycled traps are formerly real addresses that were abandoned and repurposed by mailbox providers and blocklist operators. Hitting traps signals that you are mailing stale or purchased data, and repeated hits can place your domain or IP on blocklists.
Why it matters for cold email
Cold lists built from scraping or purchased data are the most likely to contain traps, and a single pristine-trap hit can trigger a blocklisting that wrecks deliverability for every campaign, which is why verification and genuine permission are non-negotiable.
