What to say instead of "I wanted to reach out"
It is the single most common cold-email opener, which makes it invisible, and it wastes the most valuable line in the email on your intent rather than the reader's interest. It is also self-focused (I wanted) and uses the weak past tense, signaling a template. By the time you finish telling them you wanted to reach out, you have already reached out, so the sentence does no work.

When to use it
Cut the phrase entirely and open with the reader: a trigger, an observation, or a relevant fact about their world. Let the reason for contact be implied by the relevance of your first sentence rather than announced.
