What is CASL (Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation)?

Canada's strict consent-based email law requiring permission before sending commercial messages to Canadian recipients.

CASL, in force since 2014, requires express or implied consent before sending a commercial electronic message to a Canadian recipient, plus clear sender identification and a working unsubscribe honored within 10 business days. Implied consent covers cases such as an existing business relationship or a conspicuously published business address that is relevant to the recipient's role and not accompanied by a statement refusing unsolicited mail. Penalties run up to CAD 10 million per violation.

Why it matters for cold email

CASL is far stricter than CAN-SPAM, so cold emailing Canada generally relies on the narrow implied-consent exemption for published business addresses, which means you must keep proof of where and when you found each address. Misjudging consent or ignoring an unsubscribe carries some of the highest per-message penalties in email law.
