What is Envelope Sender (MAIL FROM)?
The address given in the SMTP MAIL FROM command that identifies the true sender for routing and bounces.
The envelope sender, specified in the SMTP MAIL FROM command, is the address used during the message-transfer transaction, separate from any address shown in the message headers. It determines where bounces are returned and provides the domain that SPF checks. Receiving servers copy it into the Return-Path header on delivery, which is why the two terms are often used interchangeably.
Why it matters for cold email
Because SPF authenticates the envelope sender rather than the visible From, cold-email deliverability depends on the envelope domain being authorized and, ideally, aligned with the From domain. A mismatched or unauthenticated envelope sender is a common reason outreach fails SPF and DMARC.
