What is Honeypot?
An email address or web form field deliberately planted to catch spammers and scrapers, with no legitimate reason to ever receive mail.
An email honeypot is an address that has never opted in and is seeded where only automated harvesters would find it, so any mail it receives is presumed unsolicited; in this email sense it overlaps heavily with a spam trap. Honeypots also appear as hidden form fields that real users leave blank but bots fill in, allowing systems to silently reject the submission. Blocklist operators and mailbox providers run honeypots to identify senders who scrape or buy lists.
Why it matters for cold email
Hitting a honeypot is strong evidence to a blocklist that you did not obtain consent, and it can list your IP or domain and tank deliverability for an entire campaign. Cold senders avoid them by sourcing addresses from reputable enrichment and verification rather than scraping, and by never mailing addresses that show no opt-in history.
