Metrics

What is Reply Rate?

The percentage of delivered cold emails that generate a reply from the recipient.

Reply rate is the number of unique recipients who reply divided by the number of emails delivered, expressed as a percentage. Unlike opens, replies are a first-party, hard-to-fake engagement signal, which makes reply rate the primary success metric for cold outreach. Positive replies are usually tracked separately from auto-responses and from negative or unsubscribe replies.

Why it matters for cold email

Reply rate is both the business KPI and a deliverability signal for cold email: genuine two-way conversation tells mailbox providers the mail is wanted, which lifts reputation. Optimizing for replies through relevance, targeting, and low volume aligns revenue goals with inbox placement, unlike open- or volume-chasing tactics.
