What is Role Account (Role-Based Address)?
A shared, function-based mailbox such as info@, sales@, or support@ that is tied to a role rather than a specific person.
Role accounts use a local part that names a function rather than an individual, for example info@, admin@, billing@, or abuse@. They are frequently monitored by multiple people or by automated systems, are more likely to generate complaints, and some are reserved by RFC 2142. Many email verification tools flag them so senders can decide whether to exclude them.
Why it matters for cold email
Role accounts convert poorly and complain disproportionately in cold outreach because no single person owns the inbox, and some double as spam traps. Filtering them out of a prospect list before sending lowers complaint and bounce risk and protects domain reputation.
