Deliverability
What is Spam Folder?
The junk folder where mailbox providers quarantine messages judged to be unwanted or risky.
The spam (or junk) folder is where a mailbox provider files messages that pass acceptance but fail its filtering heuristics. Placement weighs sender reputation, authentication results, content signals, and recipient engagement. Messages there are rarely opened, and repeated spam-foldering further degrades sender reputation in a self-reinforcing loop.
Why it matters for cold email
Cold emails are disproportionately filtered to spam because recipients never opted in and low engagement reinforces the provider's suspicion. Landing in spam not only kills the current campaign's reply rate but also trains the provider to filter future sends from the same domain or IP.
