What is Cold Email?
Unsolicited outreach sent to a recipient who has no prior relationship with the sender, typically for B2B sales prospecting.
A cold email is the first contact to a prospect who never opted in, distinguishing it legally and technically from marketing or transactional mail. In the US it is permitted under CAN-SPAM provided it identifies the sender, avoids deceptive headers, includes a physical address, and honors opt-outs, whereas GDPR and CASL generally require a lawful basis or consent and treat unsolicited B2C contact far more strictly. Because cold lists carry no engagement history and a higher risk of stale or trap addresses, they are inherently reputation-sensitive.
Why it matters for cold email
Cold email lives or dies by deliverability: with no prior engagement to lean on, every spam-trap hit, hard bounce, and complaint disproportionately damages the sending domain. This is why disciplined cold senders verify lists, warm domains slowly, rotate inboxes, and isolate cold traffic on dedicated sending domains separate from their primary brand domain.
