What is Email Sequence?
An ordered set of automated emails, most often an initial message plus timed follow-ups, sent until a recipient responds or the sequence completes.
An email sequence is a structured chain of messages where each step has its own copy and delay, and the recipient advances through the steps automatically. In cold email a sequence usually consists of a first touch followed by several follow-ups, with exit conditions that remove a prospect on reply, bounce, or unsubscribe. Sequences are the operational unit of cold-outreach tools, which track per-step opens, clicks, and reply rates.
Why it matters for cold email
Because most cold-email replies arrive on the second through fourth touch, a well-built sequence is the difference between a dead campaign and a productive one. Correct exit logic is also a deliverability safeguard: continuing to email someone who already replied or bounced inflates complaints and bounce rates that erode sender reputation.
