What is Marketing Email?
A bulk commercial message promoting products, offers, or content sent to a list of opted-in recipients.
Marketing email, also called promotional or commercial email, is sent in volume to subscribers whose primary purpose is advertising or promoting a product or service. In most jurisdictions it requires a lawful basis or prior consent (GDPR, CASL) and, under CAN-SPAM, must include a functioning unsubscribe mechanism, a valid physical postal address, and accurate headers. Engagement metrics like opens, clicks, and complaints from marketing sends feed directly into sender reputation.
Why it matters for cold email
Marketing email is the consent-based counterpart to cold email, and confusing the two is a common deliverability and legal mistake. Cold outreach sent to non-subscribers should never reuse the sending infrastructure or compliance assumptions of an opted-in marketing list, because cold traffic generates far more complaints and spam-trap hits that would poison a hard-won marketing reputation.
