What is Open Tracking?
A technique that detects when a recipient opens an email, usually by embedding a tracking pixel that loads from a server.
Open tracking works by inserting a tiny invisible image into the HTML email; when the recipient's client renders the message and requests that image, the load is logged as an open. The method is inherently approximate because it depends on images loading, and it has grown increasingly unreliable as mailbox providers proxy and pre-fetch images. Apple Mail Privacy Protection, for instance, loads pixels automatically and inflates open counts whether or not a human actually read the message.
Why it matters for cold email
Cold senders use open rates to gauge subject-line performance and prioritize follow-ups, but should treat the number as a directional signal rather than a precise truth given proxy inflation. Inserting an open pixel also adds a remote image and tracking domain to the message, which can marginally raise spam-filter suspicion, so some senders disable it to maximize deliverability.
