Deliverability

What is Promotions Tab?

Gmail's tabbed-inbox category where bulk, promotional, and marketing-style mail is automatically sorted, separate from the Primary tab.

The Promotions tab is one of Gmail's automatic inbox categories (alongside Primary, Social, Updates, and Forums) into which Gmail classifies mail it judges to be commercial or bulk in nature. Landing in Promotions is technically still inbox delivery, not the spam folder, and Gmail uses content signals such as marketing language, many links, heavy images, and promotional markup, plus sending patterns, to categorize. The sender cannot force this placement with a header, despite long-debunked annotation myths.

Why it matters for cold email

Cold outreach aims for the Primary tab because it should read like a one-to-one human message, and Promotions placement sharply reduces opens and replies even though the mail technically inboxed. Plain-text-style emails, minimal links, and no tracking pixels or heavy images help cold email avoid being categorized as promotional.
